sars on the lack of updates
I've been a busy, idle recent grad....Fulminating between train rides, job fairs, and naval gazing. It's tough being unemployed in the summer when you live across the street from a park.

Oh, the OTHER reason that I haven't had time to update my blog is because I was busy reading a really good blog. SO god, it puts mine to shame. And I think that it makes the world a more beautiful place.

    www.friendlyatheist.com

This guy (Mr. Good Looking, young atheist from Chicago, who I seriously hope lives in my future neighborhood in that fair city) uses his blog to promote the idea that people of various religions can have polite, thoughtful conversations about religion. AKA, he's the anti-O'Reily. A few more people like him, of any religion, would make this world more beautiful.

As a brief aside, I have always thought that if Palestine/Israel was a geographic region composed solely of atheists, they really would have nothing to argue about and a serious lack of suicide bombers.....Although a geographic region made of atheists would be quite a rarity.

good news for people who love bad news
There is nothing good to say about the world this week....
Except that, much like on September 12th, the trickle of heroic stories. The people who helped others at their own peril. The people who had enough good in them to do whatever they could -- keep a door closed, help the wounded, turn over a desk...And be glad I'm still alive. Be glad it wasn't here. And live your stupid little life, even when you're just staring as a computer screen, you're still alive.

    sun's up, mm-hmm
Isn't it so much easier to get out of bed when the sun is up before you? I don't know what it is about waking up in the dark that is so difficult, it just is. I was so happy that the sun was not rising, but up, when my alarm went off.

    kava kava
What has the same effect as marijuana, but is legal?

What has anti-anxiety effects without putting you to sleep?

What stops/prevents a panic attack without a prescription or a black market?

    It's KAVA KAVA tea!!!!Yay!!!

Used directly from kava kava root, it tastes gross.
Used from yogi tea, it's yummy. It's just like being high (so I hear), without any paranoia or pesky coppers killing the vibe. I had my first anxiety free bus ride in three years thanks to kava kava tea!

Try driving with ice cream in a cup. If you don't laugh, then you take yourself too seriously. Or your clothes are too expensive.

Dog saves US owner with Heimlich

Toby licked Debbie's face to stop her from passing out
A dog owner in the US state of Maryland says her golden retriever Toby saved her from choking to death by performing the Heimlich manoeuvre.
Debbie Parkhurst, 45, said she was eating an apple at home last Friday when a piece became lodged in her throat and she began to choke.

Ms Parkhurst said she pounded on her own chest but could not move the piece.

Toby joined in, jumping on her chest and dislodging the apple, then licking her face so she would not pass out.

    Chat shows

Ms Parkhurst, who lives in the town of Calvert, said she was convinced Toby was not playing and was trying to perform his own version of the Heimlich.

The manoeuvre, named after Dr Henry Heimlich, who first recorded it in 1974, aims to clear airways with abdominal thrusts.

Ms Parkhurst, who works with jewellery, said two-year-old Toby got serious after her own efforts failed.

"The next think I know, Toby's up on his hind feet and he's got his front paws on my shoulders," she told Associated Press.

"He pushed me to the ground, and once I was on my back, he began jumping up and down on my chest."

Ms Parkhurst is recovering from chest and stomach wounds from Toby's jumping.

"I literally have paw print-shaped bruises on my chest. I'm still a little hoarse, but otherwise I'm OK," she said.

"They say dogs leave a paw print on your heart. He left a paw print on my heart, that's for sure.

"The doctor said I probably wouldn't be here without Toby. I keep looking at him and saying, 'You're amazing'."

Ms Parkhurst and Toby have now been asked on to numerous US chat shows.

    Between comfort and possibility
Currently residing in that strange place between flying and flailing. It is so scary to watch my safety net (job) recede and so thrilling to watch the sea of possibilities spread out before me. I must give my friends some sympathy, they never know if I am calling in tears or with "the best news ever." Somewhere in all of this turmoil, I suspect I will look back at exhiliration. In the meantime, I have buckets more tears to cry about the job search blues until the day I am jump around and scream like an idiot.

Last post February 21? No excuses, just lazy.

OK Computer, one of the top 5 records ever, came out ten years ago next month. Thanks, Radiohead, for taking ugliness in our world and making a contribution to the beauty in it.

    SNOW DAY!!!!
I have a snow day tomorrow!!! I now bless the blizzard I cursed a mere nine hours ago as I dug out my plowed in car! Thank you blizzard! Thank you, over-usage of prepositions!

No waking up extra early to again take the shovel to my car! Huzzah! The only thing better than a snow day is a snow day on a Monday! This winter storm is 100% more beautiful than it was this morning.

    memory box
In August or September, 2003: Sitting outside after a rain with my friend from Texas (where they love Jesus and W.) until 1 am. This might be the first time that I really listened to someone who watches fox news. When I wasn't laughing at him for being blinded by our right wing media, he was laughing at me for being taken in by the left wing media.

    snow angels
It is so pretty and snowy out here that I got off the bus a stop early in order to walk through the winter wonderland a little extra. I just might have to make a snow angel on the walk back.

    record charitable donations
According to the financial times, 2006 yielded the most charitable cash donations since people started keeping track of it, with $35 billion. Most of this was due to Warren Buffet's gift of $31 billion to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

    sweet nothings
    Maxi Vacance!

I am on break -- sweet, glorious break! In doing nothing (going for a two hour walk with a friend to look at ducks, watching movies, sleeping in, writing and reading for fun) I am happy as a clam. What is so reassuring about NOT needing to be anywhere at any particular time that is so relieving, so sweet?

After my doctors appointment this afternoon, all I need to do is finish the story I am writing, do some yoga, wrap my Christmas presents......essentially, nothing that I actually need to do. It's beautiful!

    customs humor
So I dropped off a Christmas package at the post office this morning for my peace corps friends. I had already filled out a customs form, "magazines, snacks, and holiday cheer." tee-hee, wouldn't my friends get a kick out of that when they pick it up in French-speaking Africa and no one else will get the joke? (Maybe I am overestimating my cleverness here.)
Anyway, the lady at the post office went over the form and asked me, "How much 'holiday cheer' is in this package?"
"It is full of holiday cheer," I replied. This did not please her.
"What, exactly, is holiday cheer?" I am not making this up.
    "It's the magic of Christmas."
"They will probably want to open up this package and check for alcohol."
I filled out a new form.

If you are familiar with Mazlow's hierarchy of needs and self-acualization, I would suggest than Ani DiFranco is one of the few self-actualized people in history.

    moby
I love moby. My inner seventh grader lives in a world where moby is my boyfriend and we drink tea together and listen to records and make out. This is similar to my crush on Jordan Knight, circa fourth grade. However, if you check out Moby's journal at his website, www.moby.com, I think that you will also develop a crush on him. Moby!!!!

    civic holiday
I hope you all got out to celebrate the 5th of December. While it is difficult when holidays fall on a Monday, the Anniversary of the Repealment of Prohibition is an important date in American history. I hope every red-blooded, civil-liberties loving American was able to knock back a few Symbols of Freedom last night.

    snow globe
If there is one thing that Lake Michigan is good for (and I happen to think it's good for quite a few), it is a great snow machine. It has been snowing fairly constantly since late Thursday night. Pretty!
Today it kind of looks like the part of Donkey Kong when they are in the mountains and it is crazy fast snow.
